Step-1 Open the crafting table

Step-2 Place the sticks

Step-3 Place the Coal
Once you have placed one of the sticks, move on to the fire. The coal should be in the middle cell which is the 2nd cell of the 2nd row.

Three logs are needed to start the campfire, and should be arranged in a row on the final layer of the campfire as shown below:
