Here are some quick answers to frequently asked questions about Discord…
Discord uses a plain text language called Markdown to format its text. The good news for the average user is that using this language makes it very easy to make some basic alterations to the text. To make the text italicized, you’ll put an asterisk on either side of the chosen text (like this: *italics*). To make the text bold, you simply surround the text with a pair of asterisks (like this: **bold**). By the way, you can do both by using three asterisks on either side of the text.
Deleting a Discord server is, thankfully, fairly straigthforward. You’ll just need to take the following steps:
1. Log in
2. Go to the server you want to delete and click on the server name.
3. Go to Server Settings, then click on the option to delete the server.
Note that only a server owner can actually delete a channel – mods and admins don’t have this power.
While banning someone from Discord is actually pretty easy, it’s a little more complicated to bring them back in. If you get to the point where you want to lift a ban, though, it can be done.
Note that only an admin can unban someone. If you have the power, you can go to the Server Settings menu and find the Bans sub-menu. From here, you’ll click on the name of the user who has been banned and then choose Revoke Ban from the pop-up menu.
If you need to report someone on Discord we’ve covered that in detail here.
Adding friends on Discord is very straightforward. Log in to your Discord account on your computer or your mobile device, and then click the ‘add’ button (the silhouette with a plus sign next to it). From here, you’ll be able to add your friend’s user name in the Friend Request field. Note that you can’t just add a friend – that person has to approve your request. Once that request has been approved, though, you can freely contact one another.
Discord has become a fairly popular platform for recording podcasts, so plenty of users want to know how to record audio. Unfortunately, this isn’t something that you’re going to be able to do natively. Your best choice is to work with a program that can record Discord audio on its own. One of the best choices is the Craig Bot, which you can invite to your Discord server and with which you can record your audio with a few simple commands.
The good news about screen sharing on Discord is that it’s something that you can do natively. To start this process, you’ll need to go to your Friend’s list and start a video call. When the call successfully connects, you should be able to see a Screen Share option under your friend’s user name. Click on this option to begin sharing your screen.
Not everyone wants to deal with the Discord overlay in their games. Fortunately, Discord figured this out pretty early on and has included an option to get rid of it without requiring much effort on the user’s part.
The get rid of your overlay, you’ll need to log into Discord and go to your user options. From there, you can choose the Overlay option. Once you’ve made it to that screen, you can choose to toggle your overlay off so that you don’t have to see it again.
Not everyone wants to be seen when they are on Discord. If you want to appear offline, you’re actually only a couple of steps away. Start by going to your user menu, which can be accessed by clicking on your own icon. From there, just go to the Set Status icon. If you don’t want people to know that you are online, you can choose to be invisible. There are also options to show that you are away or that you don’t want to be disturbed.
Spoiling text on Discord is fairly straightforward, thanks to Discord’s use of Markdown. You’ll basically being doing the same thing you do when you put something in italics or bold, but you’ll use double vertical bars (||) on either side of the spoilered text instead. To spoil something, it should look something like this: ||text||. If you’ve done it right, it will be covered by a black bar when it goes into the chat. You can unspoil other people’s spoilered text for yourself by clicking or tapping on the spoiler mask in the chat.
